A Good Year

So the new year is near at hand, and I shall be seeing mine in with a lovely little shindig in Manchester, at the final Warehouse Project of the season. Amongst the stunning host of talent on show, are Simian Mobile Disco, who recently made a delightful mix to end the year for MixMag (Erol did last year's). Loads of the year's bangers, mixed in SMD's trademake gentle style.

And if you haven't got their album yet, and I worry if not, get it here.

Enjoy

Eddie Murphy

Back before he started shagging transvestite hookers, Eddie Murphy used to be amazing. But beyond the endless stream of fish out of water movies, and sweaty, purple leather suited stand up, he also had time to produce a delightful piece of 80s synth pop glory. The song would be fun on its own. But when you know it's Eddie Murphy, it quickly becomes my favourite track this December.

Degree chop it up to make it fresh, but nicely don't change too much. It was already a joy.

Listen To What I TELLIER

Been getting back into Sébastien Tellier so I thought i'd share some of his beardy cheer. I saw him play live a few years ago, he came on and did the whole of League Chicanos with a cigarette up his left nostril. Equally rank and impressive. Anyway, Daft Punk have produced his new album, which i'm sure you'll agree is exciting news. It's out in February, is called Sexuality and this is the first single...

GET DRESSED

It's that time of the year and I've returned back home to the countryside, meaning I have to suffer through dial up internet SO I'm afraid no music tracks will be appearing from me over the next few weeks... but that doesn't mean I can't still find SOMETHING to interest you. Like these new designs from Aaron LaCrate perhaps?

Although LaCrate is most famed for his DJing and his gutter music label Milkcrate Records, most recently his sick t-shirts have been attracting the attention. I'm sure many of you have picked up his Milkcrate x Ed Banger collab t-shirt over on the Milkcrate site (or perhaps you paid 5 times the price for it over on We Sold Out?) His new designs are equally as awesome and he has even re-edited the popular Ed Banger t-shirt into a black hoodie. go check it all out nowww at Turntable Lab

And as if that wasn't enough look at these awesome new sweaters So Me has produced for Revolver Stories (who's designs I was also raving about back here). Available now over on the Revolver site. It must be Christmas or something...

Yo Bro

I very much like Brodinski. From his fluokids beginnings, it's been really interesting seeing his songs/remixes/mixes improve and now position himself as one of the big guys. His remix of The Shoes was so heavy.... and after having seen his live set the other day at Polaroid in Leeds, he really felt like a guy ready to blow up.

Polaroid is a belting night in Leeds that some how magics Erol, Boys Noize, Kissy and pretty much everyone important, into a tiny club. Giving you intimate, but belting nights with acts you'll only see in superclubs afterwards.

Here is Brodinski's live mix from Polaroid, and some of his songs to really put you in the mood.

Guilty Pleasures Part II

So I'd imagine few people who read this blog enjoy Mika. But as I've mentioned before... I'm not remotely cool and I enjoy camp pop. And when it's mixed with beats, I'm a happy, happy boy. Boy 8 Bit, Switch and Jaimie Fanatic give me what I crave.

Them Bloody Beetroots!

Photobucket

Just wanted to quickly post some tunes that caught my ear this morn' (illness and essay are taking the wind out of my blogging sails). Anyway, The Bloody Beetroots are everywhere at the moment. Listen to these tracks and get on the bandwagon. 'Butter' is some pretty bad-ass atmospheric electro, especially the heavy piano breakdown with its hi-hat jiggery. The bass sound and overall darkness of it reminds me of something - its either 'Stress' by Justice, or Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds. You'll know what I mean anyway...

Them Beetroots have been remixing like mad, the results of which have usually been a bit too hectic for my taste, but they play around nicely with Étienne de Crécy's latest EP. In fact de Crécy's new stuff is so good i'm going to add that too. Sing hosannas!

Gandalf Rock

So Led Zep are pretty much everywhere at the minute, with their long, long, long awaited comeback at the O2 Arena in London the other night. So to keep on that vibe, here is a lovely remix of one of their best, by an up and coming producer/dj from Scotland, Ado/Playdoh. Kissy gave it an airing on his late night Radio 1 show the other night, and it made me wanna put my Gandalf Outfit on and masturbate with a guitar, but in a dark club with ecstasy... or something. It's great.

Caroline Take Photography

Hot damn! An artist I really like, Caroline Take, has finally decided to publish her work online!

The site is a collection of photos of merry old England as well as those taken from her travels over the last few years, during which she's captured some of the most gritty and unusual elements of Eastern/Central European and Russian culture. What's more she's done it the old fashioned way, using a cool old camera she 'bought off a bloke in a pub in Liverpool'. Getting people drunk and robbing them blind is clearly the message.

Anyway have a look it's brilliant...

WILLIAM RUSSELL

i was waxing lyrical about william russell way back at the beginning of this blog. and now i've got my hands on some of tunes to share with the rest of you. you'll all know of his JUGGLE IT remix by now, especially if you've been listening to pretty much any of the jokers of the scene dj mixes, but the rest of his tracks are just as insane. his lil mama lip gloss remix is probably the only one i've heard that can rival that of krazyfiesta, or, in fact, the original... and that is quite an achievement

PRO NAILS

Continuing with the video theme, Kid Sister (who i was raving about back here) finally dropped her Pro Nails video earlier this week. It was directed by Ruben Fleischer (think MIA's Galang and Dizzee Rascal's Stand up Tall videos as well as that incredible Har Mar Superstar advert for Vladivar vodka) and also features A-Trak and Kanye West. Need I say more?

PARTYSHANKING

These guys are pretty fun. Whilst working solo under the bizarre names of I Will Shank You For A Penny and Party Sausage they have formed into Partyshank. They’re still relatively new on the scene but have just struck gold with ‘Penis vs Vagina,’ which is a track title I think we can all relate to… Anyway, they’ve remixed it into a kind of pumped up, gay gym-workout soundtrack. My friend says it sounds like Mr Motivator being bummed on speed. Either way it’s worked wonders for my pecs and ass. Let it ride!

Partyshank – Penis vs Vagina (Shanks Killer Mix)

I Will Shank You For A Penny – Boots

Not sure why but something about the second track, Boots, reminded me of this tune by Minotaur Shock. It’s not the usual type of music you’d expect to be on here, but give it a listen; it’s incredibly well produced, has a weird fractured beat and some neat synths. Actually, I'd like to think this is the kind of thing you expect…

Minotaur Shock – (She’s In) Dry Dock Now

Finally, O.I.L.P. by Like Woah! should keep you dancing ‘til the weekend. Darn that 90’s rave piano line, it gets me every time!

Scarred Wizard's Sleeve

I don't just like beats. Oh no. From The Cramps to Tribe Called Quest to Coco Rosie, and even a bit of Willy Mason now and again. A friend of mine who knows more about these thing than I, tells me he is this generation's important singer-songwriter. And there I was backing James Blunt. Anyhoo. When he, The Chemical Brothers and Erol, in his psychadelic guise as Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve, all team up, pleasant things happen. Expect a voyage.
